Enzyprotect PM

Press Mud Preservation Solution for Consistent CBG Production

Press mud is one of the most valuable feedstocks for Compressed Biogas (CBG) production, owing to its high organic content and methane generation potential. However, during storage, press mud is prone to microbial degradation, oxidation, and loss of volatile solids, which can significantly reduce its quality before it enters the anaerobic digester.

As feedstock quality deteriorates, methane potential declines, odor issues increase, and digester performance becomes inconsistent. These losses not only affect biogas production but also reduce the overall efficiency and profitability of CBG plants.

ENZYPROTECT PM is a specialized preservation solution developed to stabilize press mud during storage. By minimizing organic matter degradation and preserving the carbon-rich fraction of the feedstock, it helps maintain methane yield potential and ensures a consistent supply of high-quality feedstock for year-round biogas production.

  • Preserves press mud quality during storage
  • Minimizes carbon and volatile solids loss
  • Maintains methane generation potential
  • Reduces odor and feedstock deterioration
  • Supports consistent digester performance
  • Enables long-term storage with minimal quality loss

5–10 kg per 100 MT of Press Mud (50–100 ppm)

A press mud storage facility required a solution to improve long-term stability and reduce organic matter loss during storage. To address this, The Catalysts Group conducted a preservation trial of EnzyProtect PM. The trial evaluated EnzyProtect PM at 100 ppm and 200 ppm against an untreated control heap over an extended storage period. Samples collected from different depths and locations were analyzed for changes in Volatile Solids (VS), VS/TS ratio, and Total Bacterial Count (TBC). Results showed that EnzyProtect PM significantly improved press mud preservation, with lower VS degradation and reduced bacterial counts compared with the control heap.

FAQ's

Why isn't stored press mud delivering the same gas yield as fresh feedstock?

During storage, press mud undergoes microbial and oxidative degradation that consumes carbon-rich
organic fractions required for methane generation. ENZYPROTECT PM limits these degradation
pathways, helping preserve the biogas potential of stored material before digestion.

How does ENZYPROTECT PM protect the energy value of stored press mud?

ENZYPROTECT PM acts as a biochemical preservation system that suppresses unwanted microbial
activity, inhibits oxidative loss of volatile solids and maintains the structural integrity of organic
matter, preserving carbon-rich fractions essential for methane generation.

Why does my CBG plant perform differently during the sugarcane off-season?

Seasonal availability often forces biogas plants to rely on stored press mud, which can lose valuable
organic matter and methane potential during prolonged storage. ENZYPROTECT PM helps maintain
feedstock quality throughout storage, enabling more consistent digester performance beyond the
crushing season.
