Objective

To preserve the valuable fermentable sugar content of B-heavy molasses during extended storage, while controlling deterioration and maintaining the quality of molasses for subsequent fermentation. The program was designed to minimize sugar losses, control bacterial proliferation and extend the effective storage life of the molasses.

Process Challenge

  • Preserving fermentable sugar during prolonged storage: Large quantities of B-heavy molasses were stored for an extended period, creating a need to protect the available fermentable sugar from gradual deterioration
  • Managing high storage temperatures: Molasses was stored at 38–40°C, creating demanding conditions for maintaining its quality during storage
  • Controlling bacterial proliferation: Microbial activity during storage can contribute to VFA and organic-acid formation, affecting molasses quality and recoverable sugar
  • Protecting valuable sugar reserves: Any deterioration in TRS across more than 20,000 MT of stored molasses could translate into significant losses in potentially recoverable fermentable sugar
  • Maintaining consistent preservation: A defined dosing and circulation regime was required to ensure uniform treatment throughout the storage tanks

Catalyst Solution – Enzymol Protect Advance

  • Enzymol Protect Advance was applied as an enzymatic preservative for the stored B-heavy molasses
  • The recommended treatment regime was 20 ppm per month, applied as two separate 10 ppm additions per MT of molasses at 15-day intervals, followed by continued dosing according to the storage requirement
  • At the start of the program, the three storage tanks were filled and the molasses was continuously circulated. Enzymol Protect Advance addition was initiated in the B-heavy molasses run-off tank on a daily basis according to the quantity produced
  • Continuous 24×7 recirculation was maintained to facilitate proper mixing of the enzyme with the stored molasses

Performance Highlights

  • 20,540 MT of B-heavy molasses was covered across the three monitored storage tanks
  • Enzymol Protect Advance was applied at a standardized 20 ppm/month preservation dosage
  • The stored molasses had an initial average TRS of 52.97%
  • After 5 months of Enzymol Protect Advance application, the technical report recorded that the TRS% of all storage tanks was maintained
  • TRS was maintained despite storage temperatures ranging between 38–40°C
  • The preservation program was supported by continuous 24×7 recirculation for effective product distribution

Key Outcomes

  • The preservation program protected the fermentable sugar reserve across approximately 20,540 MT of stored B-heavy molasses
  • TRS was maintained over five months, supporting retention of the molasses’ fermentation value
  • The standardized 20 ppm/month dosing regime provided a consistent preservation approach throughout the storage period
  • Continuous 24×7 recirculation supported uniform mixing of Enzymol Protect Advance within the stored molasses
  • The program maintained molasses quality under 38–40°Cstorage conditions
  • Preservation of fermentable sugar helped protect the potential yield value of the stored feedstock for subsequent fermentation

Conclusion

  • The five-month storage study at Yashwantrao Mohite Krishna SSK Ltd., Rethare, Satara demonstrated the effectiveness of Enzymol Protect Advance as a molasses-preservation solution for B-heavy molasses
  • Across approximately 20,540 MT of stored molasses, the program maintained TRS during extended storage under 38–40°C conditions. The combination of a defined 20 ppm/month dosing regime and continuous 24×7 recirculation provided a structured approach for preserving the fermentable sugar reserve
  • The study demonstrates the value of Enzymol Protect Advance in protecting stored molasses from sugar deterioration, preserving its fermentation potential and extending its effective storage life
